โก EV Charging Cost Calculator
South Africa 2026 โ See exactly what it costs to charge any EV, at home or on a public network.
Cost by Charger Type
๐ก Why does DC fast charging cost more per kWh?
| Charger | Where | Rate (R/kWh) | Why this rate? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic plug | Home | R2.72 | Your municipal electricity tariff |
| Wall box | Home | R2.72 | Same as your home rate โ just faster |
| Public AC | Mall / work | ~R4.00 | Network operator markup (Gridcar, Charge.co.za etc.) |
| DC fast charge | Highway / forecourt | ~R7.00 | Premium for speed โ Rubicon, Chargify, GridCar DC networks |
โก The domestic plug and wall box cost the same per kWh because both use your home electricity tariff. The wall box is just much faster โ the rand cost per charge is identical. DC costs more because you are paying the public network's rate, not your home rate.
๐ Disclaimer: Home rates are provincial averages based on 2025/26 NERSA-approved municipal tariffs. Public AC rate (~R4/kWh) and DC fast rate (~R7/kWh) are typical SA network averages โ actual rates vary by network and location. EV range figures are manufacturer WLTP/claimed values; real-world range is typically 10โ20% lower.
