The headline

Dongfeng's first EV for SA, finally on sale

Dongfeng announced its entry into South Africa's passenger-vehicle market back in December 2024, and after almost a year's wait, the electric Box hatchback finally went on sale. It lands as SA's 2nd most affordable EV, behind only the BYD Dolphin Surf, with pricing starting at R459 000 for the base E1 330. The Box measures 4 020 mm long with a 2 663 mm wheelbase — a touch shorter than a VW Polo — and features frameless windows and flush exterior door handles for a clean, minimalist look.

All four derivatives share the same front-mounted electric motor — 70 kW and 160 Nm, good for a 140 kph top speed — but split into two battery options. The E1 330 and E2 330 use a 32.6 kWh LFP pack for a claimed 330 km range, while the E2 430 and E3 430 step up to a 43.9 kWh pack for a claimed 430 km range (both figures on the CLTC cycle, which tends to be more generous than WLTP).

What's the maximum range?
The E2 430 and E3 430, with their 43.9 kWh battery, offer a claimed 430 km on the CLTC cycle — worth noting CLTC figures tend to run higher than real-world WLTP numbers.
