Volvo EX30 in South Africa: Is It the Most Underrated Electric Car?

For years, a lot of us assumed a legacy brand like Volvo was out of reach. The EX30 is changing that. It is small, very quick, packed with driver assistance, and scored the maximum five stars in Euro NCAP testing. At the time of writing, Volvo South Africa lists it from R735,500. When it launched here, Volvo called the twin motor version the fastest accelerating Volvo ever made.

Check the price first. Volvo's EX30 offer page said its promotion ran until 30 September 2026, and the listed prices below appear to include a R100,000 saving. Confirm the live price with a dealer before you decide. All prices include VAT and were taken from Volvo Cars South Africa's configurator on 1 October 2026.

What every EX30 shares

Volvo EX30 interior with the 12.3 inch portrait display and Google Maps

Across the build sheets I checked, the EX30 is a five seater with a 12.3 inch portrait display and Google built in (Google Maps, Google Assistant and the Google Play Store). You also get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over the air updates, the Volvo Cars app, digital radio and USB-C ports front and rear. Volvo includes Google services for four years.

On safety, the EX30 scored five stars in Euro NCAP, including 88% for adult occupant protection, 85% for child occupants, 79% for vulnerable road users and 80% for safety assist. Standard features include collision avoidance and mitigation, intersection autobrake, steering avoidance for pedestrians, cyclists and scooters, run-off road mitigation, post impact braking, a blind spot information system, front and rear cross traffic alert with autobrake, a driver alert system, a door opening alert, lane keeping aid, road sign information, intelligent speed assist, adaptive cruise control and traffic jam assist.

Step 1: Core (from R735,500)

Volvo EX30 front view

The only version with the smaller 51 kWh battery. It has a rear-wheel-drive single motor making 200 kW (268 hp) and 343 Nm, a 5.7 second sprint to 100 km/h and up to 344 km of WLTP range. Volvo lists adaptive cruise control, Advanced Sensing Technology and Google built in as standard.

Charging: 26 minutes for 10 to 80% at a 175 kW DC charger, and about 6 hours for 0 to 100% on a three phase 16 amp AC supply. South African launch reporting puts maximum DC charging at 134 kW on the base model.

Step 2: Plus (from R868,400)

Volvo EX30 side view

The big change is the battery: 69 kWh, up to 476 km WLTP, and a 5.3 second sprint. Here is what the Plus build sheet shows.

  • Charging: 11 kW onboard AC charger, 5 m cable, about 8 hours for 0 to 100% on three phase AC, 28 minutes for 10 to 80% on DC.
  • Climate: heat pump, two-zone climate, air quality system with humidity sensor, air quality measurement and remote cabin pre-cleaning.
  • Driving support: Pilot Assist, rear park assist camera, front and rear park assist, drive modes, one pedal drive, comfort chassis.
  • Exterior: 19 inch glossy black diamond cut wheels, high gloss black roof and spoiler, LED headlights with active high beam.
  • Interior: textile and Nordico upholstery, ambience themes, sliding cupholders, removable rear storage box, tailored sports steering wheel.
  • Pack and load: power tailgate, flexible load floor, front load compartment, boot power outlet, split folding rear seat.
  • Tech and sound: Harman Kardon premium sound, wireless phone charging.
  • Not included: panoramic roof; manually adjusted front seats with fixed lumbar support.

Step 3: Ultra (from R980,200)

Volvo EX30 roof from above

At launch, Volvo paired the Ultra with the Single Motor Extended Range and the Twin Motor Performance, so the single motor numbers match the Plus. The Ultra adds a fixed panoramic roof, Park Pilot Assist (the car parks itself) and a 360 degree camera with 3D view.

Step 4: Twin Motor Performance (from R1,014,000)

Volvo EX30 from above at the front

A second motor and all-wheel drive lift output to 315 kW (422 hp) and 543 Nm. It reaches 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, the quickest Volvo accelerating at launch. It uses the same 69 kWh battery, with a claimed 460 km range. It weighs 1,960 kg and can tow up to 1,600 kg. Charging times match the Extended Range.

Real-world range: be realistic

Volvo's figures are WLTP lab numbers. South African per-trim testing is thin. The one SA road test I found, in the Twin Motor Performance on a cold morning of about 10 degrees, showed roughly 280 km of indicated range at 98% charge, against Volvo's 460 km claim. Cold weather and highway speeds both cut range, so plan on noticeably less than the claim.

The final step up: Cross Country Ultra (R1,165,000)

The Cross Country uses the Twin Motor Performance setup: 69 kWh battery, AWD, 315 kW, 543 Nm, 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds. It adds a Cross Country chassis, front and rear shields, skidplates and lower bumpers, wheel arch extensions, 19 inch matt graphite and matt black wheels and Hill Descent Control. It stands 1,567 mm tall and 1,850 mm wide, and its onboard AC charger is rated at 22 kW. The build sheet also lists a panoramic roof, a 360 degree camera, Park Pilot Assist, power and heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and Harman Kardon sound.

Volvo's page does not show a range for it. A South African launch report quotes up to 427 km WLTP. Confirm with Volvo.

The free offers: read the fine print

The headline reads "free public charging", but Volvo's terms and conditions say otherwise:

  • Charging: a R12,000 GridCars charge card, valid for 24 months or until used. Anything left over is forfeited, and it only works at GridCars stations.
  • Home wall box: installation is free up to R7,500. You supply an electrical Certificate of Compliance first and pay any amount above R7,500.
  • Data: a Vodacom Wi-Fi dongle with 10 GB a month for three years. Unused data expires monthly.
  • Benefits cannot be transferred or swapped for cash, and Volvo can change or withdraw the offer. Ask your dealer to confirm the current terms in writing.

Warranty and insurance

Volvo SA's launch material lists a 5 year / 100,000 km warranty and maintenance plan, 5 years of unlimited kilometre roadside assistance and an 8 year battery warranty. One launch report quoted a shorter 3 year / 60,000 km maintenance plan for the Cross Country, so confirm the plan on the exact model.

I could not find an official South African premium figure. Your premium depends on your age, area, overnight parking and insurer, and on the car's value, so get two or three quotes on the exact trim.

So, is the EX30 underrated?

I think so. It combines top safety scores, deep driver assistance, quick performance and a proper warranty. Taste is personal though: think about your parking, commute and charging situation, then go and drive it.
