Why I Started This EV Journey

Fifteen years with the same car, rising petrol costs, and a simple question that changed everything.

🚗 Personal story 💰 Real costs 🇿🇦 South Africa

This is not a car review. This is not a brand comparison. This is the story of someone who drove the same car for fifteen years and one day asked a simple question that started everything.

🚗 Why I started this journey

Fifteen years with the same car felt like a lifetime, and this year I decided it was time for a change. I imagined a grown-up SUV — something that felt like an upgrade. But the price and rising petrol costs quickly made that idea unrealistic.

I then looked at hybrids and higher-end EVs, but the numbers still didn't add up for where I am financially right now. Working from home and only using the car for school runs, church and shopping made me ask a simple question:

"Do I really need an expensive petrol car? That question is where everything began."

When I started calculating how much I was spending on petrol every month just for short local trips, the number was uncomfortable. I was paying for a lifestyle the car wasn't even being used for.

🔍 The discovery and the confusion

As I dug deeper, I found the EV world confusing and, frankly, a little intimidating. Reviews and conversations often made EVs sound like something only wealthy people buy. Local information was scarce — dealers had little to no clear guidance, and many creators online dismissed EVs outright.

I fell in love with one model I saw, and then another. I warmed to the idea of an affordable EV that could actually work for my family. But jargon, charging logistics, and cost comparisons left me more confused than when I started.

💡 What I found missing
Every resource I found was either too technical, too expensive, or too international. Nobody was speaking to ordinary South Africans — families, commuters, people considering a Geely or a Dolphin, not a Tesla.

That gap is what LetsChargeSA exists to fill.

📝 What this blog is for and how we'll go forward

This blog is my journey — and it is for people like me who want an EV but don't have millions to spend. I am building a space to explain, demystify, and compare in plain language: real costs, real options, and practical steps for families and everyday drivers.

I will share what I learn about buying, charging, maintenance, and the small decisions that make a big difference. Think of this as a conversation — I will test things, ask the hard questions, and bring back answers so we can all make better choices together.

🏆
This is for another me out there

Not the early adopters with solar panels and Tesla charging walls. The rest of us. The ones who want to make a smart, affordable decision and just need clear information to do it.
